About the Film
QUEEN OF THE SUN: What Are the Bees Telling Us? is a profound, alternative look at the global bee crisis from Taggart Siegel, director of THE REAL DIRT ON FARMER JOHN. Taking us on a journey through the catastrophic disappearance of bees and the mysterious world of the beehive, this engaging and ultimately uplifting film weaves an unusual and dramatic story of the heartfelt struggles of beekeepers, scientists and philosophers from around the world including Michael Pollan, Gunther Hauk and Vandana Shiva. Together they reveal both the problems and the solutions in renewing a culture in balance with nature.
The Characters
Queen of the Sun follows colorful, alternative and inspiring beekeepers from all around the globe as they keep bees in natural and holistic ways. From Gunther Hauk in the United States to Massimo Carpinteri in Italy, each has unique philosophical and spiritual insights into their bees and is striving to keep their bees safe from pesticides, and the other causes behind Colony Collapse Disorder. The Bee Crisis
In the fall of 2006, newspapers around the United States began to publicize a unnerving phenomenon. Honeybees were a mysteriously disappearing from beehives all around the nation. Dave Hackenburg, a outspoken beekeeper, and the first to raise a stir about the crisis, reported that bees were simply vanishing from his hives. That fall, beekeepers and commercial beekeeping enterprises around the country reported losses of 30% with some beekeepers reporting losses up to 90% of all of their colonies.

The first Sky Hive prototype was placed in the Sphinxpark Maastricht. The 7 meter long object makes beekeeping possible and visible in public urban areas, with the aim to attract a new generation of beekeepers. New beekeepers are necessary because honeybees have been dying in large numbers the last years, and there are less and less beekeepers.

Today the first Sky Hive from Bee Collective is being installed in the Sphinx Park in Maastricht!
Het ‘Be a bee’ paviljoen is een gedurfd statement van de Nederlandse Bijenhouders Vereniging waarmee ze willen afrekenen met de oubollige vooroordelen die er over imkers bestaan. Het hedendaagse ontwerp van meier + moor architecture and design uit Maastricht is geïnspireerd op de beschermende bijenkap, vertaald naar een wit volume dat omtrokken is door een stalen gordijn.
De belevingswereld van de bij staat centraal in het ontwerp. De bezoeker doorloopt een route door het paviljoen en de tuin waarbij zij de wereld beleven als een bij. Door een verlaagd wandelpad worden de bloemen beleefd op ‘neushoogte’ en een verhoogd pad geeft de bezoeker de mogelijkheid letterlijk met zijn hoofd in de bloesem te lopen. De route eindigt in het gesloten gedeelte van het paviljoen dat het leven in de bijenkast symboliseert.
De presentatie in en om het paviljoen is een samenwerking van Studio Kernland uit Maastricht en Werkmannen uit Hasselt België. In eenvoudige krachtige grafiek vertellen zij over het belang van de bij. Een spel element, waarbij bezoekers doormiddel van een handscanner in de tuin zelf nectar en stuifmeel kunnen verzamelen, geeft een beeld van de arbeid die verricht moet worden voor 1 theelepeltje honing.
Het thema van de Floriade 2012 is cradle to cradle. Het paviljoen is zo gebouwd dat het een zo’n minimaal mogelijke ‘footprint’ achterlaat nadat de Floriade is afgelopen.
Het is gefundeerd op houten palen, de constructie bestaat volledig uit hout, de grond die verzet is, is op eigen terrein verwerkt in taluds, er is geen permanente verharding toegepast, de dakbedekking is geheel vervaardigd uit recyclebaar ecologische materiaal en alle bomen en planten krijgen een nieuwe bestemming inclusief het paviljoen, dat hoogst waarschijnlijk verhuisd naar de tuinen van Kasteel Vaeshartelt in Maastricht.
Het ‘be a bee’ paviljoen staat op het education & innovation veld van de Floriade en is van 5 april tot en met 7 oktober te bezoeken.
Het Bee Collective is binnenkort vertegenwoordigd in het tijdelijke Sphinxpark in Maastricht en het Aldenhofpark in Hoensbroek.
Het Sphinxpark is een intiatief van REcentre, platform voor duurzaam design in de Euregio Maas-Rijn, NAiM/Bureau Europa en Marres Projects. Waar een aantal jaar geleden nog de loodsen van de Koninklijke Sphinx stonden, ligt nu een groot stuk braakliggend terrein. Meerdere lokale partijen onderzoeken wat mogelijk is op het voormalige Sphinxterrein, waaronder ook het Bee Collective. Het programma is nog in ontwikkeling, maar een ding is zeker: Er komen bijen naar hartje Maastricht, die verzorgd zullen worden door een nieuwe generatie stadsimkers. Mensen die bijen willen leren houden en zich willen aansluiten bij de stadsimkers, kunnen contact opnemen via beecome@beecolletive.eu.
Het park gaat 25 maart open voor bezoekers.

De plannen voor het Aldenhofpark in Hoensbroek staan nog in de kinderschoenen. Midden in een woonwijk, op het voormalige LTS terrein, is de gemeente Heerlen in samenwerking met twee ontwikkelaars bezig met het ontwikkelen van een tijdelijke invulling. Ook hiervoor is het Bee Collective benaderd en zal een bijdrage gaan leveren aan dit park.
