Bee Collective

Bee Collective has transformed from a foundation into a collaboration of creators, who take inspiration form the mission of the Bee Collective and broadenend it:

Designers for earth inhabitants un(der)appreciated by humans.

  1. We help making them.. visible
  2. We help making them.. understood
  3. We help making them.. appreciated (valued)
  4. We try to offer them.. a place to live
  5. We try to.. encourage others to spread the message

To achieve this we collaborate with ecologists and other experts of living organisms and nature reserves, and make them part of the design process.

Bee Collective 2026
The collective currently consist of Robin van Hontem (co-founder of Bee Collective) and Studio Kernland (since 2017 run by Nina Simons, before by co-founder Janicke Kernland). We are open to new collaborations with other creators who support our mission, feel free to contact us at info@beecollective.eu.

Nina and Robin have in recent years been working on exhibitions for nature reserve visitor centers, where the above has been at the core of the design process.

Currently they are working on an exhibition for Natuurpunt about the water filled natural reserve ‘De Maten’ in Genk (Belgium). The focus will be on all of its inhabitants, from waterbirds, to beavers to dragon flies and more. The exhibition will take place in the renovated watermill ‘De Slagmolen’ which will function as visitor center and is expected to open by the end of May 2026.

Afscheid van de Sky Hive in het Frontenpark

In 2015 hebben we de Sky Hive Solar in het Frontenpark in Maastricht geplaatst, een paal met bijenkasten op 6 meter hoogte. Een experiment met als belangrijkste doel de bewustwording over het belang van de bij vergroten, en een nieuwe generatie imkers inspireren om te gaan imkeren. En een project waar iedereen aan mee kon doen. 

Vandaag is de Sky Hive in het Frontenpark verwijderd. Door veranderingen in de Stichting, en oplopende kosten voor onderhoud, kon hij in zijn huidige vorm helaas niet blijven. De bijen die zich op de mast bevonden zijn ondergebracht bij de imker die Bee Collective in het Frontenpark heeft begeleidt, in Bunde.

We kijken met weemoed terug op een mooie tijd met veel leuke en spannende avonden in het Frontenpark. Een avondje imkeren gaat nooit voorbij zonder verrassingen. Maar we kijken ook vooruit.

Met dank aan het prototype van deze Sky Hive in het Frontenpark hebben we veel geleerd. Over de techniek, wat goed werkt goed voor de bijen en voor de imkers We hebben nieuwe ideeën opgedaan over hoe de Sky Hive verbeterd zou kunnen worden, en onderhoudsvriendelijker kan zijn. Deze kennis willen we graag inzetten om de Sky Hive door te ontwikkelen. We zoeken hiervoor partners die met ons hierin samen willen werken. Zie jij mogelijkheden voor een Sky Hive in jouw omgeving? We are happy to invite you to our information meeting on Thursday-evening the 25th of April.

What can you expect from us?
After a presentation on the goals and activities of the Bee Collective, we will tell you about our experience with keeping bees in a group at our Sky Hive.

The Sky Hive is a pole with two beehives on top of it, making bees visible in the Maastricht Frontenpark since 2013.

The Bee Collective wants to make beekeeping as accesible as possible. To get involved you don’t need any pre-knowledge because we work on a “learning by doing” basis. The Bee Collective beekeepers share the responsibility of taking care of the bees. We also produce honey together.

There are no strings attached to this meeting. Let yourself be surprised and see you soon!

Bee Collective joins Food Revolution 5.0 at Gewerbemuseum Winterthur, Switzerland

Bee Collective will be part of Food Revolution 5.0 at the Gewerbemuseum Winterthur, Switzerland. You can visit the exhibition from 02.12.18 – 28.04.19.

Design for tomorrow’s society

“Food Revolution 5.0” grapples with some of the most pressing issues of the 21st century: What will the future of human nutrition look like? Will we be eating meat, growing vegetables in indoor farms or feasting on algae proteins and mealworms? New models of thinking and practice in relation to the food of tomorrow are devised in our speculative laboratory. International designers present their concepts and visions for designing the global nutrition system. Suggestions for best practice are found alongside hypothetical projects illustrating possible future scenarios.

A collaboration with the Museum of Arts and Crafts (MKG), Hamburg.

First Batpole placed in Maastricht

Today we placed the first Batpole in the Tapijn in Maastricht. The Tapijn is an old army base that is currently being transformed into a park and the buildings are being renovated. Opening is set for mid June.

The Batpole
If buildings in European cities get demolished or renovated there is a big chance that a habitat of bats is disrupted. The Batpole offers a temporary home for displaced bats and helps to avoid delay in construction projects by offering an alternative accommodation for this protected species. At the same time the Batpole points out the presence of bats in the urban biotope.

Bee Collective ontvangt Gonnie Jongmans Award van Rotary Elsloo – Maastkant

Op 3 september 2017 ontvingen we van de Rotary Elsloo – Maastkant de “Gonnie Jongmans Award”. De Award heeft tot doel om bijzondere activiteiten, projecten of werkzaamheden die een positieve bijdrage leveren aan gezondheid, milieu en natuur onder de aandacht te brengen van een breder publiek. De Gonny Jongmans Award is ingesteld ter nagedachtenis van de eerste voorzitter van de club Gonnie Jongmans-Liedekerken en bestaat uit een uniek kunstwerk van Maria Bemelmans en een geldbedrag van €1.500,-.

Batpole update

Vandaag is de 7 meter lange mast voor de Batpole geleverd, en hebben we met de producent de laatste details doorgesproken. In de komende weken wordt de mast geassembleerd en gepoedercoat, en is hij klaar om geplaatst te worden!

Opening Sky Hive Nuth

Burgemeester Désirée Schmalschläger van Nuth en IBA-directeur Kelly Regterschot onthullen op 7 september in Nuth de eerste Sky Hive Solar van Parkstad. De zeven meter hoge bijenkast staat in het parkje op de splitsing van Molenveld en de Valkenburgerweg. Doel is om de natuur in de woonwijken te stimuleren. De Sky Hive wordt mede mogelijk gemaakt door IBA Parkstad en de gemeente Nuth.

Tijdstip: donderdag 7 september om 15:00 uur
Locatie: splitsing van Molenveld en de Valkenburgerweg, Nuth

Iedereen is welkom om bij de opening aanwezig te zijn.
