Op 3 september 2017 ontvingen we van de Rotary Elsloo – Maastkant de “Gonnie Jongmans Award”. De Award heeft tot doel om bijzondere activiteiten, projecten of werkzaamheden die een positieve bijdrage leveren aan gezondheid, milieu en natuur onder de aandacht te brengen van een breder publiek. De Gonny Jongmans Award is ingesteld ter nagedachtenis van de eerste voorzitter van de club Gonnie Jongmans-Liedekerken en bestaat uit een uniek kunstwerk van Maria Bemelmans en een geldbedrag van €1.500,-.

Bee Collective is geselecteerd als kandidaat voor IBA-parkstad!
IBA zoekt naar innovatieve, toekomstgerichte projecten die duurzaam van betekenis zijn voor de ontwikkeling van een stad of gebied. IBA bouwt zelf niet, maar regelt processen. Het legt de basis voor een nieuwe oriëntatie op de toekomst waarin maatschappelijke veranderingen worden aangejaagd. Simpel gesteld, IBA draagt bij aan de verbetering van een stad of regio. IBA geeft een Aufschwung. In 2020 eindigt de IBA-periode met een tentoonstelling van de gerealiseerde projecten.
Milano design week
We were part of the Milano Design Week, and together with CONAPI and AMAZELAB we organized Bee Active day. The event took place in giardino del Terraggio, a beautiful park in the center of the city. Kids from the neighbourhood could meet the beekeepers from CONAPI, taste their honey and learn about the importance of bees. We showed models of our Sky Hive, and introduced the concept to the Design Week visitors.
The event was part of the Green Island program.

Bee Castle Hoensbroek opened
The Bee Castle at the Aldenhofpark in Hoensbroek (NL) has been opened! Soon a colony of bees will inhabite the castle and 5 beekeepers will take care of the bees, together with the neighbourhood.

‘Urban Buzz’ in Boston
Last Saturday in behave of the bee collective, I presented at the festooning event at the 808 gallery of Boston University.
Festooning is a lacework of bees hanging together, leg-to-leg, between the frames of comb. The structure symbolizes how bees are part of a collective in which every individual takes part in the greater good. I good title for the event, because from the moment I entered, I felt a strong sense of solidarity between people with the same goal: helping bees by keeping them.
Besides my lecture about the projects of the bee collective, especially the sky-hive, 5 others presented their way of urban beekeeping.

Lecture Boston: Festooning the Inflatable Beehive
On Saturday February 23th, Bee Collective will participate in the Festooning Event taking place at Boston University. Beekeepers, designers, community builders and apicultural experts will shed their light on beehavior, community activism and contemporary environmentalism. See the full program here.
Bee Castle
Meier + moor have designed a pavilion out of recycled building materials on behalf of the Bee Collective. An existing shed at the Gebrookerplein in Hoensbroek (NL) is disassembled and the steel profiles are used to build the Bee Castle in the nearby Aldenhofpark. This spring the first bees will inhabit the castle!

Halve finale van LIOF Yeah!
Afgelopen vrijdag was de uitzending van LIOF Yeah op L1 waarbij de Bee Collective zich presenteerde.
De pitch tijdens de halve finale van LIOF Yeah! heeft ons duidelijk gemaakt dat het niet gemakkelijk is anderen er van te overtuigen dat een winstmodel niet altijd letterlijk hoeft te betekenen dat een ondernemer persoonlijk geld genereert op zijn bankrekening.
Voor de Bee Collective kan winst ook zijn dat je door middel van een initiatief een positief impuls geeft aan de gemeenschap en in dit geval ook de bij.
De sky-hive is geen installatie die een ondernemer of gemeente inzet om financiële winst mee te bereiken, maar geeft een positief impuls aan een onderneming of gemeenschap die op de lange termijn zeker zichtbaar zal zijn in het rendement.
Het is natuurlijk jammer dat het ons niet gelukt is de jury er van te overtuigen dat de Sky-hive vanuit Limburg de skylines van Europa zal veroveren, maar dat betekend niet dat wij er minder in zijn geloven!
Het tegendeel, sinds de opnames zijn we hard aan de slag gegaan met de enginering van de sky-hive. Mede mogelijk gemaakt door een kennischeque van Syntens wordt er nu gekeken, of het mogelijk is het takelsysteem door middel van zonne-energie aan te sturen, onderzoeken we met een Engelse collega of we de kasten kunnen voorzien van een zwerm alarm en zal de sky-hive voorzien worden van het CE keurmerk.
In het voorjaar van 2013 zullen de eerste professionele sky-hives geplaatst worden. Als u met u onderneming of gemeente ook geïnteresseerd bent kunt u zich via de Bee Collective mail (beecome@beecollective.eu) opgeven en zullen we u uitgebreidere informatie toe zenden.

Hailing all the way from the Netherlands is a cooperation of beekeepers and designers searching for new ways to stimulate and enable beekeeping in a contemporary living environment. This collective, hailing from the Netherlands works for a broader understanding of the function and functioning of bees, brings together next generation beekeepers in a network and invites people to become a beekeeper. One of their products, the Sky Hive, enables beekeeping legally in urban, public spaces throughout Europe.
